Bieshelt 1800s Japanese Art

Ushibori in Hitachi Province

This artwork was created by a Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai in 1830. Japan being a larger island they had a lot of different environments all around them and they seemed to use them in artwork a lot. They also had a very unique way of constructing homes and other tools so the culture of them at that time stands out in the manmade things inside the artwork like this boat. I like how easily you can identify the differences in homes and tools that stand out in their art.

A Picnic on the Seashore

This artwork was created by Utagawa Toyokuni in 1800. It like the other Japanese artwork shows a lot of the landscape around Japan, highlighting the water in this one. With them being on an island in early times the water was a huge resource for food as it seems they are gathering food out of it in the picture. In this artwork I like how the people are portrayed. This piece unlike others that I am displaying has many people in it but they way the artists show the people is very different than other cultures and artists, they give them very simple features and very blank expressions compared to the western art that the people are the focus point of the art.

Landscape

This artwork by Kawabata Gyokusho, was created in 1887. This is a little later than the previous artworks but is still doing the same thing with more detail, highlighting the unique landscape around them. Also tying into the first piece of art shown in this blog is shows a little bit of the houses of this time period, the manmade parts in this culture still really stand out to me compared to must western creations through time. I like the added detail to the landscape as well, getting the water but also the jagged mountains and forests of the area.
