Bieshelt 1800s Japanese Art

Image
Ushibori in Hitachi Province This artwork was created by a Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai in 1830. Japan being a larger island they had a lot of different environments all around them and they seemed to use them in artwork a lot. They also had a very unique way of constructing homes and other tools so the culture of them at that time stands out in the manmade things inside the artwork like this boat. I like how easily you can identify the differences in homes and tools that stand out in their art.  A Picnic on the Seashore This artwork was created by Utagawa Toyokuni in 1800. It like the other Japanese artwork shows a lot of the landscape around Japan, highlighting the water in this one. With them being on an island in early times the water was a huge resource for food as it seems they are gathering food out of it in the picture. In this artwork I like how the people are portrayed. This piece unlike others that I am displaying has many people in it but they way the arti...

Mind Eye - Olga Ziemska This creation following the ideas of the environmental art was created in Northern Italy in the Dolomite Mountains. This creation does a good job on using natural elements to create the art. It has a very human like shape, and seems to be a representation of the head of a person and ideally showing them 'thinking' about nature. I like that it is made out of cut logs and sticks, stacking these reminds me of childhood and doing that back with my parents, though not for artistic purposes. This are seems to have very organic shapes, with it being a picture of the sculpture it also as many more color varieties and shades than most paintings are able to easily make.  Stillness in Motion : The Matka Series - Olga Ziemska This created by the same artist but in South Korea this time is still using cut wood for her art piece but seems to be using much more of the wood to finish the idea of the creation. This one also has an organic human like shape, I like how ...

American Infantry Advancing with Tanks This art created by George Matthews Harding in 1918 is one of the first art pieces I have seen in this class that does not use color. This painting was created in France on the front lines of the first world war. These paintings all seem to be quick sketches of the situation but this one manages to capture a lot of texture in the battle field. The value of the shading adds detail and allows the viewer to have a better idea of what is happening.  Returning to the Trenches This artwork created by Christopher Nevinson in 1915 created in Europe during the first world war. This artwork also being Just different values of black and white. This one not being of a actually occurring situation seem to have more of an abstract piece. This makes it difficult to distinguish the space used in the drawing as it relies heavily on the shapes working together but not creating an illusion of form.  Oppy Wood This artwork created by John Nash in 1917...

View of the City of Edinburgh This first piece of art created by Alexander Nasmyth in 1822, displays a nice calm landscape, this seemed to be similar to half the art in this period. It has a nice blend of colors reaching from light to dark. Has nice form in the depth of the picture with objects in the background. It also seemed to have a little bit of texture look to it with the detailing on the trees and river bed.  View of the castle of Heidelberg With a very similar art name, from Carl Anton J. Rottmann painted in 1815, this piece of art is similar with the focus on the landscape and specifically of a castle. This piece has a bright focal point of light that the artists uses well in the art pulling shadows from it. Similarly does a good job with the different levels of the picture making it seem 3 dimensional. The lines in both of these works are very organic following the nature they are copying.  Bonaparte Visits the Plague Stricken in Jaffa This art by A...

Apotheosis of Homer This painting made by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1827. The coloring in this painting is interesting more color than has been used compared to other art work before this. There is still a major color contrast to bring attention to the parts they want detailed. This art work still holds onto the religion influence with having angels and a centered godly being. Less clear lines in this style, doing more blending into the surroundings.  Oath of the Horatii This painting was made by Jacques-Louis-David and completed in 1785. This artwork has strong color contrast to keep the attention in the front and out of the background that has less detail. It has some more violence than some of the previous artworks but it seems to be in defense of others so likely playing into religion standing up for others. The shading does allow the artwork to have a form like view making the columns have depth.  Virgil reading the ''Aeneid'' to Augustus and Octavia Paint...

Alter of the Kings                The Alter of the Kings created by Jeronimo de Balbas, it is a sculpture in a catholic church in Mexico City, Mexico. It was created by Jeronimo de Balbas, a Spanish artist. This was connected to the Council of Trent, promoting the Catholic Church. This art work was credited completion in 1737, this was about 200 years after the Council of Trent but still is displaying praise of the characters in the catholic church.      The art work does a good job of using lines to draw the views eyes around the artwork being able to see of the talent and elements that went into the creation. It is a very large piece, they used the space very well to put mass amounts of detail but to also be able to organize it in ways like putting god above all others. The color contrast comes as a surprise to me, they have all the gold in the sculptures parts that is bright and reflective and that contrasts strongly w...

Terracotta column-krater This is a work accredited to Lydos from 550 BCE, it is an Ancient Greek bowl that has been painted. These style paintings are always interesting to be because of how easy they are able to display movement in a painting. The curvature of the vase assists in this but also the way the objects are painted to act as if they are walking. The contrasting colors make it easy to distinguish details in each object as well as the shape lines within the objects outlining details giving it more of a 3 dimensional feel. This painting seems to rely more on lines to create the form in the objects instead of changing the value of the colors. Depicted in the art is a scene based on a story of the Greek Gods telling a story of Hephaistos, Hera and Zeus. Ancient Greek stories have always been entertaining to read and learn about so tying the art into a topic that has been already enjoyed it makes it easier to connect with.  Bibliography Lydos. “Attributed to Lydos: Terr...
